Alfrex FR MCM

Metal Composite Material (MCM), Aluminum Composite Material (ACM), and Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP), are three synonymous terms for an architectural wall cladding panel manufactured by permanently bonding two skins of pre-finished aluminum to a thermoplastic core in a continuous process. Core material is either polyethylene (PE) or a mineral-filled fire-retardant core (FR).

Aluminum Composite Material (ACM), Aluminum Composite Panel (ACP), and Metal Composite Material (MCM) are the same product. Even though the vast majority of manufactured product incorporates aluminum skins, the industry-correct term MCM was adopted in North America to cover additional skin types such as zinc, copper, titanium, and stainless steel.

Metal Composite Material (MCM) can be manufactured with either a mineral-filled, fire-resistant (FR) core, or a polyethylene (PE) core with no fire-resistant properties. Under extreme heat, FR core material will suppress flame spread and contribute to material self-extinguishing once flame sources are removed. PE core material can act as a continuous fuel source enabling flames to spread vertically up a wall assembly as documented following the Grenfell Tower fire and subsequent international testing. Solid plastic (PE) core MCM does not pass NFPA 285 nor CAN/ULC S134 requirements and has been identified as a significant source in multiple building fires, which is why Alfrex only manufactures MCM for wall cladding with an FR core.

Metal Composite Material (MCM) is manufactured through a continuous process in which pre-painted aluminum coils are bonded under heat and pressure to an extruded thermoplastic core (PE or FR depending on the application) and cut to length per project requirements.

Metal Composite Material (MCM) uses the abbreviation “FR” to designate product manufactured with a mineral-filled, fire-retardant core material required to pass building code mandated fire performance tests.

Some but not all manufacturers of Metal Composite Material (MCM) will also produce their own core material. Alfrex exclusively uses fire-retardant FR core material produced by its parent company Unience Co. Ltd, to manufacture its MCM.

The fire safety of Metal Composite Material (MCM) is determined through numerous stringent fire performance tests to comply with mandated building code requirements. These include full-scale multi-story assembly fire tests — NFPA 285 in the USA and CAN/ULC S134 in Canada — along with ASTM E119 and product-specific tests such as ASTM E84 and CAN/ULC S102. All domestic MCM manufacturers including Alfrex only offer FR core MCM for code regulated construction and have completed all required fire-performance testing for the USA and Canada.

While some manufacturers of Metal Composite Material (MCM) operate coil coating lines in addition to their MCM operations many – including Alfrex - outsource the painting of aluminum coils for its product lines to companies whose core competency is coating aluminum on high-speed, continuous-application coil-coating lines with architectural-quality paint systems.

MCM is manufactured in several thicknesses depending on application: 2mm with thinner skins for signage; 3mm with a PE core for gas station canopies and similar segments; and 4mm or 6mm with an FR core for architectural wall cladding. Alfrex only manufactures 4mm and 6mm thick MCM with an FR Core.

Only two domestic MCM manufacturers have performed fire performance testing for 6mm FR versions of MCM and currently offer the product. Fire testing is required specifically for the 6mm thickness because, compared to 4mm FR MCM, the thicker core contains more combustible fuel content, requiring separate NFPA 285 validation. Alfrex manufactures 6mm FR core MCM at its Buford, Georgia plant, which has successfully passed NFPA 285 in a rainscreen installation system and met the requirements of ASTM E84.

There is no net advantage of using 6mm thick FR core Metal Composite Material (MCM) over the industry standard 4mm thick version. Compared to 4mm FR, 6mm FR can be 20% more expensive, is 41% heavier, can have up to 40% slower processing speeds during fabrication, and does not eliminate the need for panel stiffeners. Only two domestic manufacturers, including Alfrex, have passed NFPA 285 in both 6mm FR and 4mm FR configurations.

Metal Composite Material (MCM) standard color lead times differ between each domestic MCM manufacturer depending on their inventory and customer service strategies. Lead times can vary by color since some may be “made-to-order only” and carry higher minimum quantities and significant setup charges. It is important to confirm if a stocked standard MCM color is also stocked in matching 0.040” flat sheet. Alfrex stocks all standard color paint finishes shown on its color chart in 4mm FR MCM sheets and matching 0.040” single skin flat sheet, as well as painted coil for made-to-order MCM. Alfrex standard color lead times are typically two to three days for stocked finished goods materials and two to three weeks maximum for MCM production.

The lead times for custom colors in Metal Composite Material (MCM) will vary depending on the combined lead times from the coatings manufacturer, coil coater, and MCM production. From approved color match and order placement to MCM product shipment, lead times can range from 6 to 12 weeks. For Alfrex FR MCM, the typical lead time is 10-12 weeks for custom colors.

Minimum purchase quantities for Metal Composite Material (MCM) vary by manufacturer, depending on whether material is standard stocked, made to order, or a custom color. Minimums for standard color stocked items can range from 1 to 10 sheets for MCM and up to 20 sheets for matching 0.040” flat sheet. Production orders typically range between 2,000 and 4,000 square feet for both standard and custom colors but can vary higher or lower depending on the manufacturer. All Alfrex products stocked in finished goods have no minimum quantities, while Alfrex FR MCM production orders have a 2,000-square-foot minimum quantity, based on 10 sheets of a given sheet length – an important point when custom lengths are required for material optimization.

Yes - custom widths are available in Metal Composite Material (MCM). Alfrex standard widths are 62" and 50", while custom widths range from 36" up to 62". Minimum quantities are driven by rolling mill minimums of 48,611 sf for MCM, and 24,306 sf for 0.040” matching flat sheet — correlated to ingot weight rather than a single fixed square-footage rule. Custom widths are subject to longer lead times, which should be confirmed for each inquiry as they are rolling mill specific.
